WRTC 2026 – The World’s Most Prestigious Amateur Radio Competition
From 8–13 July 2026, the United Kingdom will host one of the most anticipated events in amateur radio: the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC 2026). https://www.wrtc2026.org/
Among contest operators worldwide, WRTC is widely known as the Ham Radio Olympics.
Unlike regular amateur radio contests, where each participant operates from their own station with different antennas and equipment, WRTC provides nearly identical operating conditions for every team. Success depends almost entirely on operator skill, strategy, teamwork, and endurance.
What is WRTC?
The World Radiosport Team Championship is the premier international HF contesting event. https://wrtc.info/
Participation is by qualification only. Operators earn their place through outstanding performances in major international contests over several years.
Approximately fifty of the world’s best teams will compete in WRTC 2026.
How does the competition work?
Every team travels to the United Kingdom.
The organizers prepare dozens of nearly identical contest sites, each equipped with:
- identical antenna systems;
- equal transmitter power;
- similar radio equipment;
- standardized operating conditions.
Contest locations are assigned randomly to ensure complete fairness.
The main competition is held simultaneously with the IARU HF World Championship and lasts 24 continuous hours.
Official Observers
Each team is accompanied throughout the contest by an official observer.
The observer ensures compliance with the rules, verifies equipment usage, monitors operator changes, and confirms that no outside assistance is received.
After the contest, every log is cross-checked electronically, with penalties applied for incorrect contacts or rule violations.
Why is WRTC called the Ham Radio Olympics?
Traditional contest results often depend on:
- station location;
- antenna systems;
- transmitter power;
- expensive infrastructure.
WRTC removes nearly all of these advantages.
What remains is pure operating skill, tactical decision-making, propagation management, and teamwork.
For this reason, many operators consider WRTC to be the highest achievement in amateur radio contesting.
More than a Contest
WRTC is also a worldwide celebration of amateur radio.
It brings together:
- elite contest operators;
- international referees;
- volunteers;
- equipment manufacturers;
- amateur radio enthusiasts from around the globe.
Live scoreboards and online coverage allow thousands of radio amateurs to follow the competition in real time.
Final Thoughts
Whether you enjoy contesting, DXing, or amateur radio in general, WRTC 2026 is one of the most exciting events in our hobby.
It proves that true excellence in amateur radio comes not only from outstanding equipment, but from experience, preparation, teamwork, and passion.

The organizers and the participants have forgotten how it started and who started it! Once upon a time, representatives of IARU national societies gathered to discuss the development of amateur radio. The story of the IARU HF World Championship started in Salzburg in 1983. The first step was to give certain contests the name CHAMPIONSHIP. More and more national societies decided that radio contesting was a sport, i.e., RADIOSPORT. WRTC competitors operate within the IARU HF World Championship, using the event as the official contest environment for scoring and evaluation.

Thank you very much for your valuable comment and for sharing this historical perspective.
You’re absolutely right that the roots of WRTC are closely connected to the evolution of the IARU HF World Championship and the vision of those who helped establish radiosport as an international competitive discipline. Understanding that history gives even greater meaning to today’s WRTC events.
I appreciate you sharing the IARU 100th Anniversary reference. I’m sure many readers, including myself, will find it interesting and informative. Amateur radio has a rich history, and it’s important that we continue to preserve and share it with newer generations of operators.
Thank you again for contributing to the discussion and for helping enrich the conversation.
